Directories are somewhat like an Online Yellowpages. There are many different types of directories available on the internet today. You submit your site to these directories to gain exposure and hopefully drive targeted traffic to your site. When you arrive at a directory you go to the category that best suites your site. For example, if your site is about Poodles, then you will probably go to the Animals category, then to the Pets sub category, then to the Dogs sub category and submit your site there.

Since there are so many directories out there on the web and most users find their sites through search engines, the most common reason why webmasters submit their sites to directories is for link backs. Link backs increase your sites popularity and importance to search engines. Webmasters also hope that their submissions to directories will get them some traffic when people are at the directories but usually it is minimal.
